CONTINUING ED MEANS BETTER STUDENT SUPPORT
About 150 staff attended a full-day training Feb. 9 on working with students affected by trauma or autism. Peter Buckley, a former Jackson County legislator now working with Southern Oregon Success, presented on supporting and building resilience in trauma-affected students. Rowan Hill-Walko, an autism spectrum disorders specialist from Southern Oregon Education Service District, presented The Role of the Paraprofessional and Autism 101. In addition to 90-100 district paraprofessionals, the event drew transportation and food service staff who interact with all student populations. Monthly, one-hour professional development trainings for district paraprofessionals are planned for Professional Learning Community time (Wednesday “late start” time) in March, April and May.
