Ponderosa students were honored at the school's 2nd annual Growth Awards February 27 for challenging themselves to take two or more advanced courses, hitting the 60% growth mark on state tests, improving their overall GPA or demonstrating personal growth. Ponderosa Middle School’s Math Counts club performed well at its chapter competition at Oregon Institute of Technology 2/21. The four-student team of eighth graders Zia Hill Sparks, Brook Nelson, Dominic Armijo and Carter Harmon took second place in the “official team” category. Ponderosa’s three other teams took the top three spots in the “unofficial team” category. In individual competition, Mercy Lassett Egbert won second place overall and Zia Hill Sparks won third place overall, both qualifying to compete at the state-level meet in Portland 3/7.
Communication students from Oregon Institute of Technology visited Ponderosa's 8th-grade social studies classes 1/23 to teach conflict resolution techniques demonstrated by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in his "I Have a Dream Speech."
18 students from Ponderosa and KU are preparing custom-designed robots for a qualifying tournament in Philomath 1/18-19. Cheer them on as they try for superqualifier, state and world tournaments!
Ponderosa celebrated the 15th anniversary of its beloved ACE Holiday/Christmas Store Dec. 17-19. Kudos to store founder Cindy Smith, who won 2 grants to fund store merchandise, to all those who donated items, and to all students who earned ACE ticket "money"!
Congrats!! Ponderosa Middle School is one of 300 finalists (chosen from 2,000+ applicants) in Samsung's "Solve for Tomorrow" national STEM challenge to 6th-12th graders! Pondo won a Samsung tablet and the chance to advance in the $3 million competition with a Solar Air Heating System, to be designed by 7th graders in Mr. Rico's 6th period advanced math class. Ponderosa is hosting Konnect Dental Kare in the building to provide a free dental clinic for our students. It will run this week from Tuesday through Friday. If you would like more information or are interested in this service, forms are in the office and were sent home with students last Friday.
